A student, who built and sold over 1000 theremin kits at $50 apiece while working for his doctorate, was one of the first people to use transistors rather than vacuum tubes to build music synthesisers. The Doors, The Monkees and Simon & Garfunkel used the synthesisers but it was the success of an album by Walter Carlos that, in 1968, saw the electronic music genre take off.
